The opening reception was held on Sunday, 2nd May 2010 from 18:00 to 21:00 in the General Assembly Venue. Before and during photos are below. This year there will be a EGU Keynote Closing Lecture on Friday 7th May by Jan Smit on The 30th anniversary of the discovery of the iridium anomaly at the Cretaceous Paleogene boundary: The state of the Chicxulub impact-extinction theory from 17:30 to 18:30 in Room D.

Outside each room is a timetable for the day and information. This is outside a room on the Basement level, near poster halls XY and XL.

Sunday 2nd May is the first day of the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2010.

On-site registration is available in Hall Z of the Austria Center Vienna from 12:00 to 20:00. This means you can pick up your name badge, programme USB stick and free transport pass (Monday to Friday) in advance of the start of Monday’s sessions. You need your name badge to get into the General Assembly venue.

From 18:00 to 21:00 on the 1st floor (Green Level) of the Austria Center Vienna there will be an opening reception on Sunday 2nd May. Please come along and meet your fellow GA participants.

The Austria Center Vienna (ACV), which is located next to the station “Kaisermühlen/Vienna Int. Centre” on subway line U1 running from the city centre (Stephansplatz) to Leopoldau. A Vienna metro plan (in pdf) can be found here and a travel planner for Vienna on Wiener Linien’s site.

We have recently seen the worst attack on science in ages. The hacking incident at the University of East Anglia set off a worldwide scandal, with climate scientists being accused of fraud and sceptics having a field day. Despite the complete and explicit rehabilitation of Phil Jones et al., the impression remains that scientists are dilly-dallying frauds. Clearly, scientists are vulnerable to attacks by laymen oblivious to scientific truth.
The aftermath is worrying. If we are sceptical about the causes and extent of global warming – “Science is simply organised scepticism.” (the Observer’s Robin McKie) – tampering with the atmosphere is risky business. These worries have led us to invite five people to write a daily column for EGU Today “Science under Fire”. We invite you to join the discussion on the blog and Twitter pages @DickEGUPress and @egu2010.
